In case we forget that England’s ancient
agriculture is older than religion, and our royal deer parks are
older than churches, now for the first time you can come to the
Cotswolds and experience the countryside of the past, unchanged
in a golden thread to the present day.. You'll have gourmet snacks
along the way and a splendid dinner each evening.
Tuesday
You start the walk along the Roman Fosse Way. You will be transfixed
by the deep calm and stillness of the Coln valley. This valley has
been used by religious communities for more than 1,000 years. The
gentle walk continues in this natural sanctum until you reach Bibury
- described by William Morris as "the most beautiful village
in England".
Wednesday
Today's walk engages with agriculture dating back to 2,500 BC. You
walk past Tudor houses many with thatched roofs, and cross a royal
deer park, owned by the King of Mercia in 794 AD. You walk to Sudeley
Castle, given by King Henry VIII to Queen Katherine Parr and you
enjoy the delights of the ten royal gardens - White garden, Secret
Garden, Knot Garden and many more.
Thursday
In today's walk, you engage with Royal artists and craftsmen. You
start the walk at the home of William Morris who set up “The
Sapperton Craftsmen”. You continue along canal paths through
the Golden Valley, where King Edward III set up the wool trade (1327
- 1377). At Chalford you meet and talk to local artists and craftsmen,
before traveling to Prince Charles' National Arboretum at Westonbirt,
on the border of his Highgrove estate.
Friday
In today's walk, you visit a contemporary Royal Garden. Having taken
the old Salt Way to Bisley-with-Lypiatt, you discover a secret valley
and follow its path through beech forests until - surprise! you
are standing before the gates of Nether Lypiatt House, home to Prince
and Princess Michael of Kent. You have special permission to make
your own private view of the estate - the Princess's rose garden
has more than 1,000 roses but it's rarely on view to the public.
You return by the secret valley to a special farewell dinner with
your hosts at Chalford.
The Walks are gentle and could vary between
3 and 4 miles a day, but the length is adapted to meet your needs.
