This is the story of how a brave lady saved the life of a King, and the future of the monarchy in Great Britain. It is also a story of how these valleys protected the couple as they escaped, the King disguised as a servant.

After the execution of Charles I in 1649. Prince Charles and his mother had fled to France, but returned in 1651 to reclaim his inheritance. His defeat at Worcester on 3 September 1651 ended the Civil War.


Charles II miraculously escaped by fleeing into the deep woods and rural farm country. This was the start of one of the most romantic journeys in British history a young monarch and his lady rescuer - Lady Jane Lane - traveling our local hills and valleys before escaping to France. This week is about following their footsteps.
